The thoughts shared below are based on one person’s personal experience and should not be taken as representative of every client’s journey”

The following article is based on a conversation with someone who has experienced therapy as a client through SafeTalk and has kindly given permission for their perspective to be shared anonymously. The thoughts and experiences have been paraphrased for clarity, while keeping the original thoughts intact.

As therapists, you see the client once they’ve booked an appointment. But from the client’s side, that journey usually starts much earlier.

For me, there was almost a two month gap between thinking, “I should probably go to therapy,” and actually booking my first session.

I kept coming back.

I would visit therapist’s profile, read about what they specialised in, compare their pricing, look through their social media and try to get a sense of who they were. Then I’d close the tab.

A few days later, I’d do it again.

Looking back now, I realised I wasn’t searching for the “perfect therapist”. I was slowly convincing myself that I was ready to take that first step.

I Checked the Therapist Page More Than Once

One thing I kept doing was checking availability.

Not because I was ready to book.

Just because I wanted to know what my options were.

I don’t think I realised it at the time, but messaging a therapist felt like making a commitment.

If I sent a message asking, “Do you have any availability next week?”, there was now another person involved. They would reply, I’d feel obliged to respond, and if I suddenly wasn’t ready anymore, I’d feel awkward disappearing.

That small interaction felt much bigger in my head than it probably was.

Being able to quietly open a booking page, see available dates, close it, and come back tomorrow without anyone knowing felt surprisingly comforting.

Eventually, one of those dates became “the one”, and I booked it.

The First Session Was Already Scary Enough

Once I’d booked, I wasn’t really thinking about therapy itself.

I was thinking about everything else.

Where exactly do I park?

Should I arrive early?

Which floor is the clinic on?

Do I wait outside or go in?

What if I’m late?

What happens during the first session?

These might seem like small questions, but when you’re already nervous about attending therapy, every unknown feels a little bigger.

Having all of those details explained beforehand removes a lot of unnecessary anxiety.

Cancelling Felt Harder Than I Expected

This was probably the part that surprised me the most.

I’ve always viewed therapists a little like teachers.

Someone I respect.

Someone whose time I don’t want to waste.

Once I’d booked a session, I genuinely wanted to attend it, even if something else came up.

But life happens.

Sometimes you need to reschedule.

Sometimes you need to cancel.

Even though therapy is meant to be a safe space where you can openly talk about anything, I still felt a small sense of guilt about cancelling.

Not because my therapist made me feel guilty.

Just because that’s how I personally felt.

Looking back, I realised that the easiest way to remove that feeling wasn’t reassurance.

It was simplicity.

If I could reschedule or cancel through a booking system in a few clicks, knowing both my therapist and I would be notified automatically, it removed that emotional hurdle almost completely.

It didn’t feel like I was letting someone down, but instead simply felt like managing my appointment.

Final Thoughts By Shavkat

Therapists spend years learning how to create a safe space inside the therapy room. But I think that safe space starts much earlier than that.

It starts when someone visits your website for the fifth time before they’re ready to book.

It starts when they’re quietly checking your availability without wanting to send a message.

It starts when they’re trying to figure out where to park before one of the most vulnerable conversations they’ll ever have.

These are all small moments.

But together, they shape the experience long before the first session begins.

[8
193
post-4239","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-platform-updates","tag-therapy-experience
["GET
